A greener era of clean has arrived in Cayman with the introduction of the Earth Sense line of cleaning chemicals.

Ideal for resorts, food service companies and health care organizations, they represent a new generation of cleaning products that are safe to use and which have minimal environmental effects.

Maxwell Hampshire, National Chemical Labs’ international sales manager for the Caribbean says the company’s Earth Sense product line was developed in response to tough environmental regulations being imposed on federal buildings in the United States.

The most recent additions to the 20–product line hold the Green Seal product stamp, recognized as the US’s top environmental standard.

Island Supply general manager Chris Weaver introduced the products to Cayman as part of the company’s environmental Green Solutions campaign.

“Every one of these cleaning products is biodegradable, contains no caustics, has all natural dyes and is organically produced,” he said.

The Chrissie Tomlinson Hospital was one of the first organizations to adopt the product line, and CTH’s financial and operations assistant Shahla Gilman says the choice was easy.

“We are committed to doing our part to join in the Chamber of Commerce’s challenge to become more environmentally responsible, and these products were a logical choice coming as they do from a highly respected company,” she said.

“Earth Sense products are environmentally safe, providing a much smaller chemical hazard to the health of our patients, without compromising our extremely high sanitary standards,” she said.

Mr. Weaver hopes more companies will recognize the value of using non–toxic products for their everyday cleaning needs as a way to protect both Cayman’s citizens and the nation’s fragile environment.

“Just because people are used to using bleach and other highly toxic products to achieve a state of cleanliness doesn’t mean that it is having a beneficial effect in the long term,” he said.

“Traditional cleaning products are well known to be harmful – that danger poison label isn’t there for nothing. We’ve got the interest of the health of the people in the cleaning business in mind.”

The Earth Sense dispensing system, similar to the soap machines found in public restrooms, also encourages companies to adapt the less is more approach.

“With the dispenser, the dilution is pre–measured, so you are using only the amount that is actually needed, saving money and eliminating wastage,” said Mr. Weaver.
