Cayman Islands Golfers Love Glow Ball Open
Wednesday 18th July, 2007 (Cayman Compass)
Golfers in Grand Cayman cannot be accused of being in the
dark about new developments after they found the light and
enjoyed a novel new way of playing their favourite sport –
at night time.
Glow ball golf is set to take off after 96 players teed off
at the Links at Safehaven for the inaugural Amstel Night Glow
Ball Open. Organised by newly arrived director of golf Sean
Wilson, it was sponsored by Jacques Scott and Amstel Light.
The format for the event was a two person alternate shot where
both players teed off and they alternated shots in from the
best drive. A modified course was set up with par being set
at 32. For the tournament all flags, flag poles and hazards
were adorned with glow sticks to guide the players and the
golf ball had an LED core that blinked. To add to the atmosphere
and to ensure that no one got hurt, everyone wore luminous
necklaces and bracelets.
Glow ball contestant Mike Dill said: “This is like
rave party for adults, this is so much fun!” Davy Ebanks
also enjoyed himself despite hitting six balls into the lake
on ninth along with partner Henk Niewenhuis. He said: “This
is a lot of fun but is the most difficult thing I have done!”
