Cayman Marathon Going Green this Sunday
Thursday 28th November, 2007 (Cayman Compass)
Runners in the Cayman Islands Marathon, half–marathon,
team relay and Kids Fun Run this weekend will be drinking
from eco–friendly cups which are made of Nebraska corn
and dissolve into biodegradable matter after a period of time,
thanks to local distributor Island Supply.
The cold drink cups, called Greenware, are 100% compostable.
Island Supply has donated 16,000 of these special cups to
the event.
“We are pleased to provide the Cayman Islands Marathon
with these cups,” said Chris Weaver of Island Supply.
“Greenware is an environment–friendly product
that offers an alternative way of disposing of waste materials.
This race is going to utilize a lot of cups and we thought
we should try to protect the environment as much as possible.
These cups will help to do just that.”
“We are so grateful to Island Supply for giving us
these unique cups for our race,” said Race Director
Rhonda Kelly of Kelly Holding Ltd. “Our volunteers always
do a great job of cleaning up the trash that naturally occurs
with an event of this magnitude but it is reassuring to know
that if they miss a spot, these cups will not become an environmental
hazard or an eyesore to the public.”
The Cayman Islands Marathon, half–marathon and four–person
relay takes place this Sunday, 2 December starting at 5am.
Registration is available at CaymanIslandsMarathon.com. Participants
can also do walk–in registration at the Kelly Holding
