In Appreciation of Tequila
Tequila is a spirit that hails from Mexico. In fact, it must be made from blue agave plants grown in the states that surround the city of Tequila:
- Jalisco
- Guanajuato
- Michoacan
- Nayait
- Tamaulipas.
Tequila Classifications
Blanco Tequila – Clear tequila, also known as silver, is the pure liquor that is bottled right after distillation. It offers the closest flavor to the blue agave and mixes terrific mojitos and margaritas. Don Julio Blanco has 40% ABV, has aromatics of citrus, and flavors and finish of light and sweet agave.
Reposado Tequila – An “aged” tequila, reposado must be aged for 2-11 months in oak barrels. It’s softer, with greater aromatics, than blanco tequilas. Clase Azul Reposado Tequila is a high-end bottle that offers aromatics of spice, caramel, and agave along with flavors of jasmine, cinnamon, and honey.
Añejo Tequila – Aged for a one year minimum for a smooth and sophisticated taste and dark color. If aged for greater than three years, these tequilas are referred to as Extra-Añejo. Herradura Ultra Añejo is full-bodied with hints of agave, vanilla, dried fruit, and wood.
Tequila Cocktail Recipes
Spicy Margaritas
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ oz. Clase Azul Tequila Plata
- 1 oz. cointreau
- ¾ oz. lime juice
- Jalapeno pepper, sliced
- Lime wedge
- Taijin season
Instructions:
- Prepare your serving glass by rimming it with the lime wedge and dipping it into taijin.
- Muddle a couple of jalapeno slices within a cocktail shaker.
- Add the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and ice. Shake thoroughly.
- Strain into the prepared glass and garnish with three jalapeno slices.
Watermelon Tequila Cocktail
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup water
- ¼ cup sugar
- 8 cups watermelon, diced
- ¼ cup lime juice
- 1 ¾ cups blueberries
- ¾ cup mint leaves
- 1 ¼ cup Don Julio Blanco Tequila
- Ice
Instructions:
- Simmer the water and sugar on medium heat to dissolve the sugar. Let cool.
- Puree the watermelon in a blender and then strain the juice over a bowl with a mesh strainer.
- Combine the sugar syrup, lime juice, blueberries, and mint leaves in a pitcher and muddle with a wooden spoon.
- Add the watermelon juice and tequila.
- Refrigerator for a couple of hours to chill.
- Serve over ice in tall glasses, garnished with mint.
