About German Riesling

Twenty percent of all of the wine grapes planted in Germany are Riesling grapes and they are Germany’s favorite. To talk about German wine, you have to start with this iconic grape.

What’s special about German Riesling?

Riesling grapes are white grapes that produce aromatic white wines. Germany focuses on Riesling like no other country, and the top vineyards there are devoted to this grape. There are German Rieslings for everyone from first-time wine drinkers to wine geeks.

The grapes are naturally high in acid, and the cool, northern climate of Germany means this acid stays in the grapes even into the fall harvest season. Some German Rieslings are sweet, some are bone dry, and most examples fall somewhere in between.

Where do Riesling grapes grow?

Riesling probably originated in Germany many centuries ago, but is grown today in much of the wine producing world, including: Germany, Austria, France, Australia, New Zealand, America and Canada.

How can you tell if a German Riesling is sweet or dry?

German wine labels can be a bit intimidating to read, but the simplest way to know if a German Riesling is dry or sweet is to look at the alcohol level in the wine. The higher the alcohol, the drier the wine; the lower the alcohol, the sweeter. In other words, it the wine’s alcohol level is above 12.5 or 13 percent, it will be dry. If it’s 8 or 9 percent, you can expect it to be on the sweeter side.

What does German Riesling smell and taste like?

Riesling wines can have aromas and flavors that range from lime and other citrus to apple flavors, to stone fruit and even tropical aromas.

We recommend the 2016 Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett from Mosel, German. It has a fresh and pleasantly fruity nose with tastes of green apple, quince, honeysuckle, lemon and ginger.

Another great choice is the 2009 Schloss Johannisberger Rosalack Auslese Riesling from Rheingau, Germany. It has the intense fruity aromas of ripe pear, mango and papaya with hints of acacia honey and rose petals.

Can you drink German Riesling with food?

German Riesling is one of the best wines for food. Pair it with:

  • Fish and shellfish
  • Steamed mussels and raw oysters
  • Ceviche
  • Pork, including ham
  • Poultry
  • Salads and vegetables
  • Egg and cheese dishes
  • Barbecue
  • Southwestern foods
  • Asian dishes like Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Indian
  • Desserts
