Italian White Wine Recommendations
Italy’s white wines are diverse. With many native varieties, there is an Italian white wine to fit every budget and occasion. Just knowing a few of them will ease the confusion and simplify your shopping trip. Here are several recommendations from the experts at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits:
Pinot Blanco: Known as Pinot Blanc in France, this grape is planted widely in northwest Italy, where it has a lighter, crisper style and is just lightly oaked, if at all. At times, it is used in blended wines and forms the background for the sparkling wine, Franciacorta. It pairs well with seafood, light-flavored meats, and mild cheeses. We recommend the Elena Walch Pinot Bianco with its fruity aromas, fresh apple notes and the touch of herbs in the bouquet.
Pinot Grigio: This fine white wine has crisp, light, fruit flavors that go well with chicken, shellfish, rich fish and pastas. Try Ruffino Lumina Pinot Grigio, a medium bodied, lively, and elegant white wine; Santa Cristina Pinot Grigio, which is straw yellow in color and has delicate aromas of orange flowers, bananas and tropical fruit; or the Kris Pinot Grigio, which is vibrant and crisp and offers delicate aromas of acacia flower and citrus.
Sauvignon Blanc: One of the driest, crispest white wines, Sauvignon Blanc has a refreshing quality. This versatile wine works well with a range of foods, including chicken, seafood, cheese, oysters and vegetables and is suitable year-round. Enjoy the highly regarded Vie Di Romans Piere Sauvignon Blanc with its classic varietal aromas of tomato leaf, exotic fruit and citrus that practically jump out of the glass.
Italian Red Wine Recommendations
Italy is on par with France and Spain as a wine-making country. Here are several red wines that are a great place to start:
Sangiovese: In Italy, Sangiovese is the most widely planted red grape variety. It is the main grape used in the popular red wines of Tuscany, where it is the primary component of the wines of Chianti. We suggest the Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico from the heartland of the Chianti region. We think you’ll enjoy the notes of red berries and exotic fruit alongside hints of licorice, currants, vanilla, and passion fruit.
Barbera: One of Italy’s most renowned red wines, Barbera is made with the Nebbiolo grape and produced chiefly in Italy’s northern Piemonte region. Grown on formerly royal-owned vineyards, the Fontanafredda Barbera has excellent berry fruit, with soft peppery and cinnamon notes.
Nebbiolo : This is Piemonte’s other, more well-known wine (although not as widely planted as Barbera). Nebbiolos from this region are a bit softer on tannin. We recommend the 2015 Vietti Perbaco Nebbiolo which is strong, intense and powerful when young, complex and elegant with aging.
