The Macallan Guide

The Macallan is one of Scotland’s most famous distilleries. It was one of the first to be legally licensed in Scotland when it was founded in 1824. It produces one of the world’s biggest-selling single malt whiskies and combines American, Spanish and Scottish distilling traditions.

The Macallan 12-year-old Triple Cask is part of the 2018 relaunch of the Macallan range and replaces the Fine Oak range. It has been aged for 12 years in a combination of European and American sherry-seasoned oak casks and American ex-bourbon oak casks that deliver an exceptionally smooth and delicate character, full of citrus fruits, vanilla and fresh oak.

The whisky has a rich straw color and, on the palate, offers notes of fresh ginger alongside dark berries, caramel, light toasted oak, nutmeg, black pepper and rich cocoa.

Here are some other things you should know about Macallan Scotch Whiskey:

  • Macallan Is a “single malt” whisky, which means it was made at one distillery. Along with Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, the company makes up one-third of the world’s single malt whisky market.
  • Macallan is a “Speyside” whiskey. Speyside is a prolific area of the Highlands region, roughly broken down into two types: lighter, heathery, grassy whiskies (like Macallan) and richer, fruitier, sweeter whiskies.
  • The distillery has a Master of Wood. Macallan is the only Scotch distillery with such an expert; he is responsible for sourcing Macallan’s 200,000 or so oak barrels from oak trees in the U.S. and Spain. He has them dried, shaped at a Spanish cooperage, and seasoned with Oloroso sherry. Although about 10 times more expensive than most oak-barre production, it contributes richness to the final whisky.
  • Macallan whiskey is not dyed. Macallan is one of the few whisky producers that does not use caramel coloring. The color is all-natural and packs lots of fruit flavor despite its light color.
  • Macallan holds the record for the most expensive whiskey ever sold at auction. The bidder paid $628,000 for a 6-liter bottle of Macallan M, a combination of the oldest whiskey stocks aging at the Macallan distillery.  They ranged from 25 to 75-years old and the signature bottle was custom-designed by renowned French crystal maker, Lalique.
