What is Prosecco?

Buy Prosecco on Grand Cayman

Prosecco is an Italian white wine made from highly aromatic Glera grape that is produced in a large area that spans nine provinces in the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. It is named after the village of Prosecco.

Prosecco was also originally the name of the grape, but when the wine became more popular, better clarification was needed to keep just anyone from using the name. The prosecco grape was renamed ‘Glera’ in 2010, and it must make up 85% of the wine for it to be labelled Prosecco. The remaining 15% may only be comprised of these nine grapes: Bianchetta Trevigiana, Perera, Glera Lunga, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, and Pinot Noir.

The majority of Prosecco is made with the Charmat–Martinotti method, also known as the tank method, in which the fermented wine goes through a secondary fermentation in big steel tanks, rather than in the bottle like champagne. Because this method is so efficient, Prosecco can be made in large quantities to meet the high demand.

The wine is almost always made in fully sparkling (spumante) or semi-sparkling (frizzante) style. It is best served in a tulip style sparkling wine glass. The height and slenderness of the tulip glass is said to help preserve the bubbles, and the bulb at the top helps collect more of the floral aromas that emanate from the wine.

Prosecco is usually served chilled and unmixed, but it does appear in some popular mixed drinks. It was used in the original Bellini that was created in 1948 at the famed Harry’s Bar in Venice, Italy.

Words of Advice

It’s against the law to possess, buy, or drink alcohol in the Cayman Islands if you are under 18 years of age. It’s also against the law to buy alcohol for a minor. Expect all bars, nightclubs, restaurants, convenience stores and liquor stores to ask for photo ID before allowing you to buy liquor or drink it on their premises. For international visitors, a passport is the best option.

The Cayman government also has zero tolerance for drunk driving. It is completely legal to have an open container of alcohol on the beach, but don’t carry open containers in your car or in any public area that isn’t zoned for alcohol consumption. If you’re caught, expect a generous fine or a day in jail.
