Interesting Facts About Ron Zacapa
Ron Zacapa Rum is made in Guatemala from virgin sugar cane and blended using the five-centuries-old technique devised for sherry. It is sweet and incredibly smooth with cocoa, orange and honey flavors.
- Ron Zacapa was first developed by local Guatemalan doctor Alejandro Burgaleta, a chemist, who tinkered with the distillation and stabilization of his rum for some time before finally unveiling the first bottle of Ron Zacapa Centenario in 1976, on the centennial anniversary of the town of Zacapa in eastern Guatemala. The rum is now one of Guatemala’s premium products.
- The sugar cane used to make Ron Zacapa rum is harvested by hand, which leads to higher quality because machines can’t selectively recognize ideal ripeness. The company also developed a custom hybrid machete to harvest sugar cane at its freshest.
- Most rum is distilled from molasses, with yeast feasting on the darker caramelized sugars. Ron Zacapa is distilled from “virgin sugar cane honey,” or “virgin honey,” the syrup that comes from the first pressing of the sugar cane plant, with about 72% sugar content, compared to molasses’ estimated 50%.
- Most of the aging process for Ron Zacapa’s rum takes place in a facility about 2,300 meters (1.4 miles) above sea level. The spot was carefully chosen by the master distiller for its cooler night temperatures and thinner, lower-oxygen air — better for a gentler aging process.
- Like sherry, Zacapa rum is aged under a process called “Sistema Solera.” This involves a succession of stacked barrels in which rum as young as six years old ends up combined with far older rums to create a unique flavor profile. The rum is aged in whiskey, Pedro Ximenez, Cognac, and French oak barrels.
- Zacapa’s taste is so superb, it was the very first rum to be placed in the Rum International Hall of Fame.
