Buy Veuve Clicquot on Grand CaymanVeuve Clicquot Champagne is easily identified by its label and flavor. A bottle of this Champagne makes luxury accessible to more budgets, without a sacrifice of quality. Well-known as a luxurious Champagne, the reputation has been centuries in the making.

The Veuve Clicquot Champagnes are crafted from a combination of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier, with Pinot Noir being the primary wine for structure and flavor. A plethora of Champagnes come from this House, both vintage and non-vintage.

The Backstory

Veuve Clicquot House of Champagne was originally founded in 1772 as a side hustle of Philippe Clicquot, a textile trader. When Philippe’s heir, Francois died in 1805, the House passed to his widow, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, otherwise known as Madame Clicquot.

Her business savvy expanded the Veuve Clicquot House of Champagne’s footprint throughout the world, and she is the namesake for the Champagne House. The innovations that Madame Clicquot employed for this success includes:

  • Creation of the first ever vintage Champagne in 1810;
  • Introduction of the brand to the Russian market with a shipment of over 10,000 bottles to St. Petersburg in 1814;
  • Invention of the riddling table in 1816;
  • Creation of the first ‘Rose d’Assemblage’ by adding still red wine to sparkling in 1818.

The Yellow Label of Veuve Clicquot was first trademarked in the late 1800s, and Louis Vuitton purchased the Veuve Clicquot House of Champagne in 1986. Today, the House produces over 1 ½ million cases of bubbly annually.

Veuve Clicquot’s Winemaking Process

  • Separate processing of each type of grape – Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Noir – so that each flavor is fully developed.
  • Malolactic fermentation – tames the acidity of the vino.
  • Taste evaluation to maximize the blend before bottling.
  • Horizontal bottle aging for 5-7 years; non-vintage wines are aged for 2 ½ years.
  • Next, the riddling table turns the bottles intermittently to make any sediment fall in the bottle’s neck.
  • Lastly, disgorgement releases these sediments, and liqueur d’expedition balances the sweet to dry ratio.

The Six Veuve Clicquot Champagne Styles

  • Brut Yellow Label – 30-45% reserve wines, primarily Pinot Noir with moderate Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, aged at least three years, bold and balanced aromas and flavors; notes of pears, ginger, and grapefruit.
  • La Grande Dame – first made to celebrate the bicentennial of the Veuve Clicquot Champagne House in 1972, 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay.
  • Champagne Rosé – blend of classic Brut Yellow Label and still red wine.
  • The Rich Collection – 45% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier, and 15% Chardonnay, meant for use in Champagne cocktails.
  • Champagne Demi-Sec – made from the classic Brut Yellow Label, with sweeter and fruitier flavors.
  • Extra Brut Extra Old – a Cuvee limited to two vintages, 2013 and 2019.
