Cayman Currency

Cayman has its own currency – the Cayman Islands Dollar (currency code KYD). You may see prices displayed with CI$ to distinguish them from other dollar-denominated currencies.

The currency is tied to the US Dollar and does not fluctuate. The exchange rate is CI$1.00 to US$1.20, however cash is traded at CI$1 to US$1.25. This means that your US$5.00 bill is worth CI$4.00, and your US$20.00 bill is worth CI$16.00.

When buying beer in the U.S., it’s common to find domestic beers (e.g., Coors, Budweiser, Michelob) at about half the price of imported beers (e.g., Amstel, Heineken, Stella Artois). Since nearly all beers in the Cayman Islands, except the locally produced Caybrew beers, have to be imported, you may not notice a significant price difference.

In bars (including restaurant bars) as well as small clubs, expect to pay from US$4.50 to US$6.00 for domestic beers and from US$6.50 to US$8.50 for imported beers. In a liquor store or market, a bottle of domestic beer may range from US$1.50 to US$3.00, while a bottle of imported beer may range from US$2.50 to US$4.00.

Discover a New Beer

Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits is the exclusive distributor for many fine beers, including Coors Light, Heineken, Dos Equis and Amstel Light. We also carry beers from around the globe, including Cayman’s own domestic beers, that you may not find anywhere else, such as:

  • Blue Moon Belgian White: This is an unfiltered wheat ale brewed by Coors in Denver, Colorado and spiced in the Belgian tradition for a smooth taste. It has won a variety of medals in the white beer category.
  • Caybrew: This is a full-bodied premium pale lager with a clean, crisp character and is Cayman Islands Brewery’s flagship product. It has been awarded an international gold medal for quality. You may also enjoy Caybrew Premium Light at only 95 calories.
  • Newcastle Brown Ale: The biggest selling bottled ale in the UK, Newcastle Brown Ale sells more than 47 million bottles a year. The taste is sweet, hoppy and well balanced with a malty, nutty aroma.
  • White Tip Lager: Another entry from Cayman Islands Brewery is this smooth, moderate-bodied pilsner, the world’s first conservation beer. Part of the profits are donated to Cayman Marine Conservation.
  • Tucher Helles Hefeweizen: This gold-medal winning German wheat beer comes from the Tucher Brau brewery, founded in 1672 in Nuremberg, Germany.
