A Selection of White Wines
Chardonnay
Chardonnay is the world’s most famous white wine grape. Some of the best come from France and California, but there are also fine examples from other parts of the world, including Italy, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Chardonnays can be very complex and often have distinctive buttery aromas, hints of vanilla, and notes of spices like cinnamon and clove.
Pair it with: Mild cheeses, seafood, shellfish, chicken, pork, risotto and pasta, mild Caribbean dishes with tropical fruit flavors, and fruity desserts.
Try a bottle of: The award-winning Jordan Chardonnay, one of the best from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma, California, or Ca’ del Bosco Chardonnay Curtefranca from Lombardy, Italy.
Pinot Grigio
This grape is a pink-skinned mutation of the pinot noir grape. When produced in France, it is called Pinot Gris. Many prefer those from Italy, but France, Germany, California and Oregon do very well with the grape. Pinot Grigio is low in acidity and is a medium-to-full bodied wine with a rich, floral bouquet.
Pair it with: Fish, shellfish, chicken, pastas with creamy sauces, spicy Asian dishes, and soft, mild cheeses.
Try a bottle of: The award-winning Cupcake Vineyards Pinot Grigio from Veneto, Italy, or the Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio from South Eastern Australia.
Riesling
The best Rieslings come from Germany, but France, Washington, New York and Australia are close behind. Flavors range from dry and stony to floral and sweet, and the best wines have great acidity that keeps the wine lively.
Pair it with: Shellfish, chicken, pork, pasta, salads, sausages and deli meats, and Southwestern foods.
Try a bottle of: Blue Fish Riesling from Pfalz, Germany
Sauvignon Blanc
Depending on its ripeness, this grape can deliver interesting flavors. Sauvignon Blanc is typically crisp with a citrusy zing. It is now successfully grown in wine regions all over the world and has become the signature white wine of New Zealand, where it features intense green citrus and berry fruit flavors.
Pair it with: Fish, shellfish, chicken, pork, sushi, salads, and pasta dishes with creamy sauces.
Try a bottle of: Dark Horse Sauvignon Blanc from California or the award-winning Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region of New Zealand.
