Wine Buying Tips

Browsing and buying wine should be a fun, positive experience. But, with over 1,300 types of wine grapes, where does one begin? Here are four red wines and four white wines we hope will help you start your adventure into wine:

Reds

California Zinfandel: This well-known wine grape is widely cultivated in California’s Napa and Sonoma Valleys. It is lighter in color than other reds, but has a bold taste with notes of raspberry, chocolate and cinnamon, and pairs well with meats. Try Napa Valley’s Frog’s Leap Zinfandel.

Chilean Carménère: This medium-bodied red wine originated in Bordeaux, France but now grows almost only in Chile. Treasured for its red-and-black berry flavors and notes of green peppercorn, it is similar in body and texture to Merlot. It pairs well with nearly every type of food. Try the excellent Montes Purple Angel Carmenere from Chile’s Colchagua Valley.

South Australian Shiraz: Shiraz is the name given to the dark-skinned Syrah grape when it’s grown in Australia. The wine has dark fruit flavors from sweet blueberry to savory black olive, a very full-bodied taste, and contains high amounts of healthy antioxidants. Pair it with bold-flavored foods. Try the award-winning Jacob’s Creek Shiraz from Southeastern Australia.

Spanish Monastrell: This wine, also known as Mourvédre in France, is a deep, dark, full-bodied wine that is native to Spain. It’s considered an Old World European wine and is often enjoyed by people who love Cabernet Sauvignon. Monastrell pairs well with meats and rich foods. Try the award-winning Bodegas El Nido ‘Clio’ from Murcia, Spain.

Whites

California Chardonnay: Chardonnay is the world’s most famous white wine grape, but California’s wines are among the most highly regarded. With buttery aromas and notes of spices such as cinnamon and clove, they can have an oaky flavor. The wine pairs well with mild cheeses, seafood, chicken, pork and fruity desserts. Try the award-winning Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay from Napa Valley.

French Pinot Grigio: Also known as Pinot Gris, this fine white wine has ripe apple and pear tastes and crisp, light, fruit flavors. Many people’s favorites come from Italy, but France, Germany and California do well with the grape. It has also become the pre-eminent white wine grape from Oregon. Pinot Grigio pairs well with seafood and pasta dishes. Try a bottle of Hugel Pinot Gris Tradition from Alsace, France.

German Riesling: Rieslings are among the finest light, fruity and sweet wines in the world. Some of the best come from Germany and Austria, but there are also dry Rieslings that come from Washington State, New York and Australia. The wine pairs well with seafood and spicy foods. Try the Becker Laisser Faire Riesling from Pfalz, Germany.

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc: Depending on its ripeness, this grape can deliver interesting flavors. It is one of the driest, crispest white wines and is now the benchmark white wine of New Zealand, where it features intense green citrus and berry fruit flavors. Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with everything from salads to seafood. Try the award-winning Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Wairau Valley.
