Learn about Liquor

The liquor that you choose from one day to another is largely situational. The mood of the occasion or the person, flavor preferences, location, meal, and sense of adventure can all influence your order or purchase.

As you make your choice of spirit, maximize the experience with some helpful tips from the team at Jacques Scott.

Begin with Terminology

Understand the language around alcohol in order to order your drink most accurately.

  • Neat – poured directly into a glass at room temp with no ice
  • Up – strained into a stemmed cocktail glass after being shaken with ice
  • Over/on the rocks – both terms mean served with ice
  • Single vs. Double – A single pour is 1 ½ oz. while a double is 3 oz.
  • Short – served in a rocks glass with equal parts spirit to mixer
  • Tall – served in a larger glass with a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio of spirit to mixer

Pointers for Drinking Rum

When enjoying rum, avoid the bottles with an overly high alcohol content or with artificial flavors or colors. These brands may be cheaper, but they will lack the flavor of quality rum. As you make your drink, enjoy it neat with an ABV lower than 45%; for bottles with a higher alcohol content, drink it on the rocks.

Savoring rum should be just that – savoring. Take your time and relish each element of the mouthful’s flavor. Rum is also an excellent choice for mixing drinks!

Pointers for Drinking Whiskey

To taste whiskey, swirl the drink in the glass, smell the drink gently, and take a drink slowly so that your entire mouth experiences the flavor. Dilution of whiskey slightly can often bring out new flavors and reduce the burn, warranting the addition of a splash of water or ice.

  • Bourbon
    • Straight bourbon – aged for 2+ years without additives
    • Blended bourbon – a minimum of 51% straight bourbon
    • Best enjoyed neat
  • Scotch
    • Enhance by adding a bit of water

Pointers for Drinking Brandy

The best experience drinking brandy is a neat pour in a brandy snifter to concentrate the flow toward your noise and the precise segment of your tongue. The warmth from your hand holding the glass will release the aromatics and flavors of the brandy. As with other spirits, revel in the smell and the sips of your drink slowly.

Pointers for Drinking Tequila

Tequila, when enjoyed the “right” way is sipped by the glass, not taken in a shot. Lime and salt aren’t required for quality tequila, but if you like, you can enjoy a bit occasionally while sipping. To enjoy tequila authentically, follow your tequila with sangrita, a spicy and sweet combination of citrus juice, hot sauce, and tomato juice.
