The Hennessy Experience
Cognac is a particular type of brandy made in the Cognac region of France, and Hennessy is one of the most popular Cognac brands in the world. Hennessy produces an entire line of Cognacs, with the quality and price increasing with age and complexity. Hennessy may be aged anywhere from a minimum of two years to more than 30 years.
Hennessy Cognac is made of Ugni White grapes fermented into wine and then twice-distilled into eau-de-vie. Once complete, aged, and bottled, Hennessy is 80-proof with a 40% ABV. Each 1 ½ oz. shot has 100 calories, and drinkers enjoy tasting notes of oak, florals, fruit, spice, and vanilla. Best practices for serving Hennessy include neat, on ice, or in a mixed drink.
Types of Hennessy Cognac
Hennessy White – aged for two years, used primarily for cocktails
VS “Very Special” – youngest of Hennessy’s Cognac, aged a minimum of two years, a blend of about 40 different eau-de-vie, aromatics of toasted almonds, brown sugar, and fruit, tasting notes of creamy vanilla, fresh finish.
VSOP “Very Superior Old Pale” – aged a minimum of four years, initially crafted for King George IV in 1817, a blend of 60+ eau-de-vie, aged up to 15 years and rested in oak, great on its own or in a mixed drink.
XO “Extra Old” – aged a minimum of ten years – original Hennessy first made in 1870, a blend of 100 pre-aged 30-year-old eau-de-vie, aged further in select casks, notes of sweet fruit and pepper with chocolate, vanilla, and wood hints, best sipped.
Hennessy Black – 43% ABV/86 proof, pale and gold eau-de-vie, aged in oak, aromatics of floral brandy, classic taste, made for mixing.

The Tamarindo
Ingredients:
- 2 ¼ oz. Hennessy VS
- 1 ¼ oz. simple syrup
- 1 oz. Tamarind puree
- 2 ¼ oz. lime juice
- 1 ¼ oz. club soda
- Cinnamon sugar
- Cinnamon stick
Instructions:
- Add the Hennessy, simple syrup, Tamarind puree, and lime juice to a mixing glass.
- Stir well and strain into a prepared glass. The glass should be rimmed with cinnamon sugar.
- Top with club soda.
- Garnish with a cinnamon stick.
Hennessy Ginger Cocktail
Ingredients:
- 1 ¼ oz. Hennessy VS
- 3 ⅓ oz. ginger ale
- Lime wedge or fresh ginger for garnish
Instructions:
- Add the Hennessy to a highball glass.
- Add ice to the glass.
- Top with ginger ale.
- Garnish with a lime wedge or fresh ginger.
