Discover Your Inner Whisky Lover

The proper whisky for your bar is the one that best answers your cravings, and the only way to discover which meets that definition is to try them all! The team here at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits can help by describing the characteristics of different brands so that with an understanding of whisky vocabulary and your preferences, you’ll be prepared to expand your repertoire.

Basic Whisky Vocabulary

  • ABV, Alcohol by Volume – the percentage level of alcohol in liquor, wine, and beer
  • Blended whisky combines single malt and grain whiskies to craft a uniquely flavored bottle. The whiskies in question do not have to come from the same producer or time period.
  • A cask – a wooden barrel in which whisky matures – usually comprises American, European, or Japanese oak.
  • Cask Strength – the ABV of the whisky straight from the cask and into the bottle, 40-65%, depending on the duration of maturation.
  • Charring is the process through which wood flavors become incorporated into the whisky by burning the cask’s interior.
  • Distillation – the process of transforming a slightly alcoholic wash into an extremely alcoholic liquor. Producers heat the wash in a still and evaporate the alcohol, directing it through the still’s neck into the lyne arm, where condensation occurs, leaving a concentrated alcohol.
  • Dram is a Scottish term for the serving of whisky.
  • Drum malting is a method of malted barley production wherein barley is soaked in water within a large drum.
  • Fermentation – a process that converts sugar into alcohol. For whisky, this process begins with wort added to a washback with yeast and continues until the process is complete and the wort has become wash with an ABV of 5-8%.
  • Single Malt – Whisky composed of 100% malted barley produced at a single distillery, which may include whiskies from different casks produced during a close time period married together. The age displayed reflects the youngest of the whiskies within the blend.
  • Vatted Malt is a whisky produced from at least two single malt blends but no grain whisky.
  • Wort – a sugary liquid that is used to produce alcohol during fermentation.
