Rum is made from sugarcane juice or molasses, a byproduct of sugar refining, and it was most likely first distilled in Caribbean sugarcane plantations in the 1600s.
Barbados may have been home to the first distillery, but rum was also produced in Brazil in the early 17th century. Today, it is produced all over the world, with many of the best distilleries in the Caribbean, Brazil, and several other countries.

- Appleton Estate 21-Year Old from Jamaica
The Appleton Estate, established in 1749, has been receiving awards for its exceptional rums since the 1860s. To many rum aficionados, it is “the Rolls Royce of Rums.” The Appleton Estate 21-Year Old Jamaican Rum, which blends rum aged for at least 21 years, is among the best in the world.
- El Dorado 12-Year from Guyana
An International Gold Medal Winner, this excellent sipping rum from the Demerara region of Guyana is blended from rums aged 12 to 16 years in American oak (bourbon barrels). If has a coffee liqueur aroma and a sweet flavor that is not overwhelming.
- Gosling’s Black Seal from Bermuda
The Gosling family began blending rum in the early 1800s. Black Seal, named for the black wax originally used to seal the bottles, is rich, spicy and well-balanced. It and ginger beer are the signature ingredients in Bermuda’s national “Dark ‘n’ Stormy” cocktail.
- Rhum Clément 10-Year Old Rhum Agricole from Martinique
Aged a minimum of 10 years in Bourbon barrels, this exceptional rum is produced on the island of Martinique in the French West Indies and made from fresh sugar cane juice. It is meant to be sipped and savored and goes quire well with a world-class cigar.
