What to Pair with Your Seafood

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the world’s most famous white wine grape, one of the most widely planted, and beloved by people all over the world. Some of the best chardonnays come from France and California, but there are also fine examples from Italy, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Chardonnay pairs very well with white-fleshed fish, such as halibut, mahi-mahi and tilapia, as well as with salmon and shellfish, particularly with lobster, fresh boiled crab or mild crab cakes, and scallops.

Try a bottle of the award-winning Jordan Chardonnay, one of the best from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma, California

Pinot Grigio

The pinot grigio grape is a pink-skinned mutation of pinot noir. When produced in France, it is known as Pinot Gris. Many people’s favorites come from Italy, but France, Germany, California and Oregon do very well with the grape.  The wine is low in acidity and is medium-to-full bodied with a rich, floral bouquet. Pinot Grigio pairs exceptionally well with shellfish, fried calamari (squid) and lean, white fish such as snapper.

We recommend the award-winning Cupcake Vineyards Pinot Grigio from Veneto, Italy.

Riesling

Riesling is a highly aromatic and fruity grape variety. It can span a broad range of styles, being produced in both dry to sweet and light to full-bodied variations. Although historically associated with Germany, delicious Rieslings today also come from Alsace, France, Australia’s Clare and Eden Valleys, and Washington and New York’s Finger Lakes region in the U.S. Rieslings pair quite well with dishes like plain steamed mussels and raw oysters as well as with salmon and tuna.

We recommend the Becker Laisser Faire Riesling from Pfalz, Germany.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is now successfully grown in wine regions all over the world, including California, Chile, South Africa, northern Italy and Australia, and has become the signature white wine of New Zealand, where it features intense green citrus and berry fruit flavors. Pair Sauvignon Blanc with delicate fish, such as filet of sole, tilapia, flounder or halibut, and shellfish, such as simple steamed clams.
