Grand Cayman’s Hidden Gems

The two most popular tourist attractions in Grand Cayman are Stingray City, where you can interact with the majestic, graceful Caymans Southern Stingrays that inhabit the shallow waters surrounding the Islands, and the Cayman Turtle Farm, where you can swim and snorkel with thousands of Green Sea Turtles in the 1.3-million-gallon saltwater lagoon.

When cruise passengers are in George Town, you can expect both attractions to be packed with people. Why not spend some time at one of Grand Cayman’s lesser-known, but equally interesting, hidden gems?

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park – This beautiful 65-acre botanic park is paradise if you’re drawn to native flora and fauna. Vibrant, colorful gardens will treat you to all kinds of rare, beautiful flowers, such as the rare Ghost Orchid, the Banana Orchid (Cayman’s national flower) as well as endemic animal species, such as the Cayman Blue Iguana, which is found nowhere else on earth, the West Indian Whistling Duck, and the majestic Cayman Parrot, the national bird of the Cayman Islands. The Park is also home to the endangered Blue Iguana Recovery Project.

Rum Point – This expansive beach is on the north side of Grand Cayman, about 10 miles from George Town. Lounge in a hammock in the shade of the Casuarina trees or snorkel out beyond the shallow beach area, where you’ll enjoy swimming with sea turtles, sting rays, parrot fish and lobsters. And, don’t miss the Wreck Bar and Grill where you can savor authentic island cuisine and delicious cocktails.

Crystal Caves – This geologic wonder, situated in a lush tropical forest in North Side, Grand Cayman, took millions of years to form as seawater erosion created caverns filled with stalagmites, stalactites, crystal-like mineral deposits, and a gorgeous interior lake. They are rumored to have been a hideout for pirates, but three of them are now available for daily tours (except Good Friday and Christmas Day).

Bioluminescent Bay – For a unique evening adventure, take a kayaking tour of the small, protected Bioluminescent Bay on the north side of Grand Cayman. The magical phenomenon, which causes the sea to glow during the darkest nights, is created by tiny single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates that emit light as they move in the water. Be sure to reserve a trip to Bio Bay in advance because the brightest light displays follow the moon cycle.

The Cayman Islands offer some of the best attractions in the world for residents and visitors alike. Feel free to stop in at one of our Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits liquor stores in George Town, Seven Mile Beach, Savannah or East End for more tips!
