What is Tequila?

Tequila is a distilled beverage that is made from at least 51 percent of the fermented sap of the blue agave plant, a succulent plant that is native to Jalisco, Mexico, which is cooked, mashed, fermented, double distilled, and then sometimes aged in barrels.

Tequila production is highly regulated and must be made from blue agave plants that are grown in one of five Mexican states that surround the city of Tequila – Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.

There are only about 150 distilleries in all of Mexico and most of them make tequila for multiple brands. There are currently about 2,000 tequila brands, and some of the most popular are Cuervo, Don Julio, El Jimador, Patron, and Herradura.

Things to Know About Herradura Tequila

  • Herradura tequila is made near the base of “Tequila Volcano,” an actual volcano in Jalisco, Mexico, where most of the world’s tequila production is located. The native blue agave plant for Herradura tequila grows around the base of the volcano, or the “lowlands,” and the volcano is responsible for the rich, agave-friendly soil.
  • Herradura Tequila was first registered in Mexico in 1928. The name means “horseshoe” in Spanish. The son of one of the early owners supposedly found a glinting horseshoe in the midst of the agave one day, hence the horseshoe on the label.
  • Gabriela de la Peña ran Herradura in the late 1950s, modernizing and enriching the brand over the course of her 40 years in charge. Under de la Peña’s watch, Herradura introduced the “reposado” and “extra añejo” tequila categories to the world.
  • Herradura had the very first female master tequila distiller. Maria Teresa Lara Lopez began working at Herradura in 1987, was named master distiller in 2009, and eventually retired in 2017.
  • Herradura uses 100 percent Blue Weber agave in its tequila. Some “mixto” tequilas are made with some agave, and the rest of the alcohol consists of a cheaper, often harsher, neutral spirit.
  • One of Herradura’s biggest fans was Bing Crosby, of “White Christmas” Fame. He and his fellow actor, Phil Harris, helped bring the brand to the US for the first time in 1955.
