How to Host a Wine Tasting Party

Most people only taste one wine at a time, so it’s difficult to really know our likes and dislikes. This is one reason that wine tasting parties have grown in popularity. Why not grab a few bottles and invite some friends over for an easy, fun and educational get-together?

Selecting Wines

Most wine tastings feature four to eight different wines with a common theme that ties them together. You’ll find all of them at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits.

  • Regional: This theme focuses on wines from a specific region. For example, compare Bodegas El Nido “Clio,” a deep, dark, full-bodied Monastrell from Murcia, Spain; Baron de Chirel Rioja, a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon from Rioja, Spain; Capafons-Osso Sirsell, an intense, full-bodied red from the Priorat region of Catalonia, Spain; and the Torres Mas La Plana Cabernet Sauvignon from Penedes, Spain.
  • Variety: Sample what a specific wine variety tastes like from different regions. For example, compare Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Wairau Valley; Cakebread Cellars Sauvignon Blanc from California’s Napa Valley; Montes Sauvignon Blanc from Chile’s Aconcagua region; and Vie di Romans Sauvignon Vieris from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy.
  • Style: Taste a series of similarly styled wines, such as “crisp, dry white wines” or “rich, bold reds” or “dessert wines.” In dessert wines, for example, taste the Chateau Coutet Barsac, the revered sweet Sémillon from Bordeaux, France; the Donnafugata Ben Rye Passito, a Muscat/Moscato from Pantelleria, Sicily, Italy; the Oremus “Mandolas” Tokaji from the Tokaj region of Hungary; and the Schloss Johannisberg Blaulack Riesling, one of the world’s finest sweet wines from Rheingau, Germany.

How Much Wine Will You Need?

A bottle of wine is about 24 ounces, and a standard tasting pour is about half the size of a regular serving, or about two to three ounces. Some guests may want extra tastes. For a party of eight to 10 guests, plan on at least two bottles of each wine or, more realistically, one bottle per person. You’ll also want to set out plenty of water crackers or simple loaves of bread for palate cleansers.

If you want to buy wine in Grand Cayman, whether for your personal use or for a wine tasting party, the amazing number of options can be overwhelming. The knowledgeable staff at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits can also help maximize your enjoyment by selecting the wines for you.
