Italian Red Wine Regions
Italy is on par with Spain and France as a wine-making country and is famous for having nearly 400 grape varieties. Here are just two regions that produce top quality Italian red wines.
Veneto
One of Italy’s most productive and most important wine regions, the Veneto region is best known for producing sparkling Prosecco wine. Its most notable red wines are produced in the areas closest to the Adriatic Sea and Lake Garda, such as Valpolicella, Amarone and Bardolino.
For a good red wine from the Veneto region, we suggest the Sartori Amarone della Valpolicella, one of the region’s most prestigious red wines. This one is full-bodied with deep fruit flavors and supple tannins. It pairs well with chicken, duck and cheeses.
Tuscany (Toscana)
Situated in central Italy, Tuscany is one of the most famous and prolific wine regions in Europe. Excellent red and white wines are produced, but the best known is Chianti.
For a good wine from Toscana, we suggest the Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico from the heartland of the Chianti region. We think you’ll enjoy the notes of red berries and exotic fruit alongside hints of licorice, currants, vanilla, and passion fruit. This Chianti pairs well with pork spare ribs and barbecued steak.
Italian White Wine Regions
Friuli-Venezia Giulia Wine Region
The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where winemaking dates back to Roman times, is located in northeastern Italy. Although small, this is one of the foremost Italian destinations for top-quality white (and red) wines.
The maritime climate and good soils create an ideal environment for growing vines and producing unique, high-quality wines. Friuli regional favorites from our experts at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits include:
Pinot Grigio: This fine white wine has crisp, light, fruit flavors that go well with chicken, shellfish, rich fish and pastas. Try Ruffino Lumina Pinot Grigio, a medium bodied, lively, and elegant white wine; Santa Cristina Pinot Grigio, which is straw yellow in color and has delicate aromas of orange flowers, bananas and tropical fruit; or the Kris Pinot Grigio, which is vibrant and crisp and offers delicate aromas of acacia flower and citrus.
Sauvignon Blanc: One of the driest, crispest white wines, Sauvignon Blanc has a refreshing quality. This versatile wine works well with a range of foods, including chicken, seafood, cheese, oysters and vegetables and is suitable year-round. Enjoy the Bastianich Sauvignon Blanc, an excellent full-bodied wine from the hills of Friuli, or the highly regarded Vie Di Romans Piere Sauvignon Blanc with its classic varietal aromas of tomato leaf, exotic fruit and citrus that practically jump out of the glass.
