About Disaronno

Disaronno is an extremely popular Italian almond-flavored liqueur that was formerly called Disaronno Amaretto. It is blended and bottled in Saronno, Italy, and has been the pride of the Italian liqueur world for over a century. It is produced in other areas of the world today, including in the Netherlands and the U.S.

Amaretto literally means “little bitter” in Italian. The name is comes from mandorla amara, or bitter almond, which is its primary flavor. The liqueur is produced by several brands, including Disaronno and Lazzaroni. Disaronno’s liqueur is sold in an oblong glass decanter designed by a craftsman from Murano, Italy.

Disaronno’s recipe, passed down from one generation to the next, dates back to 1525 and continues to be produced by the Reina Family. Surprisingly, no almonds are used to make it. Instead, the marzipan-like flavor is achieved with apricot kernel oil, burnt sugar, and a variety of 17 herbs, fruits, and spices.

Fun Facts About Disaronno

  • The potent Disaronno liqueur was reportedly invented by a widowed innkeeper in Saronno, Italy, in 1525. After moonlighting as a model for a Leonardo Da Vinci art student named Bernardino Luini who needed a model to represent the Virgin Mary in the frescoes of his local church, the lovesick widow concocted a mixture of brandy and apricot kernels as a symbol of her everlasting devotion.
  • If you like Disaronno’s flavor, count yourself in good company – iconic fashion designer Vivienne Westwood and actress Sadie Frost are big fans. The liqueur was also featured in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film “The Godfather.”
  • Disaronno is very flexible and mixes well with many different flavors, from fruits to coffee and cinnamon to ginger. It is found in creamy cocktails, can add a sweet touch to martinis, and gives a nice kick to fruity highballs. It’s so versatile that Disaronno should absolutely be a staple in your bar!
