What is Disaronno?
Disaronno is a popular Italian almond-flavored liqueur that was formerly known as Disaronno Amaretto. It is blended and bottled in Saronno, Italy, and has been the pride of the Italian liqueur world for more than a century. It is produced throughout the world today, including in the Netherlands and the U.S.
Literally, amaretto means “little bitter.” The name is derived from mandorla amara, or bitter almond, which is its primary flavor. It is produced by several brands, including Disaronno and Lazzaroni. The liqueur made by Disaronno is sold in an oblong glass decanter designed by a craftsman from Murano, Italy.
The recipe for Disaronno, passed down from one generation to the next, dates back to 1525 and continues to be produced by the Reina Family. Surprisingly, no almonds are used to make it. Instead, the marzipan-like flavor is achieved with apricot kernel oil, burnt sugar and a variety of spices, herbs, and fruits.
How to Drink Disaronno
Disaronno can be served straight up as a cordial, on the rocks, or as part of a cocktail mixed with other alcoholic beverages, with Coca-Cola, ginger ale, or fruit juice. It may also be added to hot chocolate and is an ingredient in the Italian version of an Irish coffee. It makes a delicious dessert drink.
Disaronno is very flexible and mixes well with many different flavors, from fruits to coffee and cinnamon to ginger. It is found in creamy cocktails, can add a sweet touch to martinis, and gives a nice kick to fruity highballs. It’s so versatile that Disaronno should be a staple in your bar.
