Head to the Beach

You can’t avoid spectacular beaches in the Cayman Islands. The largest and most popular is Seven Mile Beach, where you’ll find most of the resorts and most of the people. If you’re looking for a quieter, more peaceful, but equally beautiful stretch of sand, consider these alternatives on the north side of the Island:

  • Starfish Point: The crystal-clear water at this beach on the northeast tip of Grand Cayman, also known as Ivory Kai Point, is often full of amazing orange Cushion Starfish that gather here to feed on micro-organisms found on the seabed, depending on the season and tide. Snap photos, but don’t remove starfish from the water or think about keeping one (they’re protected by law, and you will risk a fine or prison time).
  • Rum Point: This expansive beach is on the north side of Grand Cayman, about 10 miles from George Town. Lounge in a hammock in the shade of the Casuarina trees or snorkel out beyond the shallow beach area, where you’ll enjoy swimming with sea turtles, sting rays, parrot fish and lobsters. And, don’t miss the Wreck Bar and Grill where you can enjoy authentic island cuisine and delicious cocktails.

USS Kittiwake

Dive or snorkel on the wreck of the USS Kittiwake, a 251-foot-long former submarine support ship. Following almost 50 years of active service in the US Navy, she was sunk in 2011 to serve as an artificial reef and an ocean tribute to seafarers worldwide. The water is clear enough to see the wreck from the surface and is ideal for snorkelers and people diving for the first time. Explore the ship deck by deck or snorkel from above to see 50 species of coral and more than 500 species of fish.

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

This beautiful 65-acre botanic park is paradise if you’re drawn to native flora and fauna. Vibrant, colorful gardens will treat you to all kinds of rare, beautiful flowers, such as the rare Ghost Orchid, the Banana Orchid (Cayman’s national flower) as well as endemic animal species, such as the Cayman Blue Iguana, which is found nowhere else on earth, the West Indian Whistling Duck, and the majestic Cayman Parrot, the national bird of the Cayman Islands. The Park is also home to the endangered Blue Iguana Recovery Project.

Whether you live on Grand Cayman or just love vacationing here, there are plenty of things to do that will leave you with fantastic memories. If you’re cruising the Caribbean, order duty-free liquor from our sister site.
