There are plenty of transportation options for getting around the Cayman Islands. The knowledgeable team at Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits offers suggestions on different ways to explore the Islands.
About the Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Grand Cayman and her smaller siblings – Little Cayman and Cayman Brac – are located 150 miles south of Cuba, 180 miles northwest of Jamaica, and just over one hour by air from Miami, Florida.
Grand Cayman is the largest of our three Islands and the location of our colorful capital, George Town. The Island is only about 22 miles long, but packed with spectacular beaches and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Cayman Brac, about 89 miles to the northeast, is smaller (about 12 miles long), but has the most spectacular terrain of the three islands, while Little Cayman, five miles west of Cayman Brac, is even smaller (about 10 miles long) but is a nature lover’s dream.
Car Rental in the Cayman Islands
If you want to explore Grand Cayman and don’t want to depend on taxis, a rental car can be the perfect solution. You will need a driving permit which will be issued by the car rental company (with a fee), and it’s important to keep in mind that you will have to follow the British tradition of driving on the left.
On Grand Cayman, you will find several car rental companies at the airport and at resorts in George Town, including Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, and Cayman Auto Rentals. Most of them require advance reservations. In midwinter, reserve several days in advance due to high demand. There are several local rental car agencies on Cayman Brac and one on Little Cayman.
Getting Around by Taxi
Taxis are abundant on Grand Cayman, and drivers are typically knowledgeable and friendly. They can be found easily at the airport, at the cruise ship terminals in George Town, and in front of the major resorts along Seven Mile Beach.
Prices are set by the government and, since the Islands are small, the cost for a quick trip to go shopping, for example, will be inexpensive. You can often hire a cab for a tour of the Island. And many visitors choose taxis over rental cars to avoid having to drive on the left side of the road.
Other Ways to Get Around
Buses are available on Grand Cayman from a modern terminal adjacent to the Public Library on Edward Street in George Town. Buses serve West Bay, Bodden Town, East End, and North Side, but the handiest line may be the one that runs from George Town along Seven Mile Beach every 20 minutes during the day.
Another great way to get around Grand Cayman is by renting a bike or scooter. Your hotel may rent bikes, and Cayman Cycle Rentals on West Bay Road offers a wide range of scooters, 10-speed bikes, and mountain bikes.
